Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is planning to spend $100 billion on chip manufacturing plants in the U.S., President Donald Trump is expected to announce at the White House Monday, according to someone with knowledge of the announcement.
TSMC, which manufactures advanced chips for Nvidia, Apple, Google, and Tesla, would make the investment over the next four years. A spokesperson for TSMC said in a statement that C. C. Wei, the chairman and CEO of TSMC, would be at the White House "later today."
"We're pleased to have an opportunity to meet with the President and look forward to discussing our shared vision for innovation and growth in the semiconductor industry, as well as exploring ways to bolster the technology sector along with our customers," the spokesperson said.
The Wall Street Journal first reported on the new TSMC investment.
U.S. officials have long been concerned about the lack of chip manufacturing on American soil. If TSMC builds plants in the U.S., it would need to secure customers. It is unclear whether the Trump administration is offering potential customers any incentives to produce their AI chips in America.
In 2020, TSMC said it would build a chip manufacturing plant in Phoenix, Arizona for $12 billion. It recently increased the investment to $65 billion to expand the site, alongside an up to $6.6 billion subsidy from the U.S. Commerce Department.
