Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit and an investor, joined billionaire Frank McCourt's bid to acquire TikTok as a strategic adviser specializing in social media.
McCourt, through his entity that researches and advocates on internet issues, Project Liberty, has expressed interest in acquiring TikTok's U.S. operations for months. In January, it said it submitted a formal offer to parent company ByteDance.
Project Liberty has also said it has "informal commitments" of $20 billion for a TikTok deal and isn't interested in acquiring the app's recommendation algorithm. Earlier this year, "Shark Tank" investor Kevin O'Leary also signed on to Project Liberty's bid. Ohanian founded venture firm Seven Seven Six in 2020.
